Resurface

A game by Aether Soup Studios

Aether Soup is a small indie studio run by a handful of artists, designers, and engineers. From 2020-2023 we developed “Resurface”, an oceanic themed dungeon-crawler game.

I served as lead 2D Artist, creating concept concept art, character sprites, and graphic assets for the production.

My work was referenced by the team’s 3D artists and motion designers as they built out the final gameplay assets.

Character Sprites

The game’s protagonist! I wanted her character design to reflect her introverted, grounded, and slightly reserved persona. As a homebody, her outfit of choice is a cozy hoodie.

Nea

Nea’s extroverted girlfriend! The yin to Nea’s yang, Zoa has a bright, sunny personality and dresses for style rather than comfort.

Nea’s Room

In between runs, the player can let Nea rest, recharge, and refresh boons in her little bedroom.

The Abyss (Melancholy)

At the beginning of each run, Nea awakens in the deepest part of her subconscious, an abyssal cave environment filled with slow-moving deep sea denizens.

Mid-Sea (Anxiety)

After clearing the Abyss, Nea progresses to the mid-sea level of the game, where serpentine monsters weave in between wispy weeds.

Coral Reef (Panic)

In the game’s final level, Nea finds herself in the brilliant, glimmering, quickly moving environment of the coral reef.
